There is a lot of talk going on about branding, but what exactly is your brand and how do you use it so that you can reach more people and market your products or services?

  Your brand is the core of your marketing, the central theme of your products and services.

  Your brand is not your logo or your company name, unless of course you are a Microsoft or Yellow Pages online directory.

  In order for people to come and hire you, or to buy from you in droves, your brand needs to be crystal clear, attractive, exciting and powerful.  In fact your brand needs to be powerful enough to inspire your customers to take action, and at the same time it needs to proactively express to you what you are about and what your uniqueness is.

  Once you are sure about your brand, you also get a solid and easy way to talk to people about your work.  This makes your marketing so much easier when it becomes clear in your mind what you are selling in the first place.

  When you are building your brand you are creating a memorable marketing message that will inspire people to take action and choose you over your competitors.

  Here are five useful tips to help you find your brand:

  The core of what you do is your brand.  What feelings or emotions does your business inspire in you and your customers?  Do you know that people's decision to buy is based on emotions and not on facts?

  Think about how you present yourself not only on your website, but also when people see you, talk to you on the phone, or read your email.  Is your marketing constantly saying what you want?  Are people getting confusing messages from you, or is it clear from the beginning what you do?

  Think like your potential customer, try to get into their minds and look at your products or services from their point of view.  How do they perceive what you do, and how does it make them feel?

  What do you do that makes you stand out from the crowd?  If you do not think you do this, then you need to think of a way that you can, because your brand should be different from anyone else, it should not be the same as others but better.

  What are your best abilities, do you know your greatest strengths?  Choose an unbiased person who knows you well to help you decide what your top features are;  Your brand should be based on your unique strengths and abilities.

  Ultimately, successful marketing requires building a strong, memorable, compelling and meaningful brand, and something that you can do with a little thought, and a little help from your (unbiased) friends.
